Frequently asked questions about this paycheck calculator

How do I calculate my take-home pay?

Enter your gross pay (salary per period or hourly rate × hours), select your state and W-4 filing status, and the calculator subtracts federal tax, state tax, and FICA to show net pay per period.

What is a take-home pay calculator?

A take-home pay calculator estimates how much of your gross paycheck you keep after taxes and deductions — the same job as a paycheck calculator or net pay calculator. This page covers both salary and hourly workers in all 50 states.

How much tax is taken out of my paycheck?

Typical paychecks include federal income tax, state income tax (if your state has one), Social Security (6.2% up to the wage base), and Medicare (1.45%, plus 0.9% on high earners). Your W-4, gross pay, and state determine the exact amounts — use the breakdown above for your inputs.

If I make $1,000 a week, how much taxes are taken out?

With $1,000/week gross in Texas, single filer, and default W-4 assumptions, total withholding is often about $157 per week (~16% effective), leaving roughly $843 net. In a taxing state like California, federal and state withholding are typically higher — run your state in the calculator.

What percentage of my paycheck is withheld for federal tax?

There is no single percentage — federal withholding uses progressive brackets and your W-4. As a rough guide, middle incomes often see 8%–15% of gross go to federal income tax per check, plus 7.65% FICA on most wages. The calculator shows your exact federal line and effective rate.

What is FICA on my paycheck?

FICA is Social Security and Medicare taxes withheld from employees. For 2026, Social Security is 6.2% on wages up to $184,500; Medicare is 1.45% on all wages, with an extra 0.9% on income above $200,000 (single).

How does my W-4 affect my paycheck?

The IRS W-4 (2020 and later) tells your employer how much federal tax to withhold based on filing status, dependents, other income, and deductions. Update your W-4 when you marry, have children, or take a second job. This calculator models those fields as estimates.

How do I fill out a W-4 for my paycheck?

Complete Step 1 (personal info and filing status), Step 2 if you have multiple jobs, Step 3 for dependents, and Step 4 for other income or extra withholding. Give the signed form to payroll — you can change it anytime. See the W-4 steps section above or IRS Form W-4.

How much is $50,000 a year after taxes?

It depends on state and filing status. Example: $50,000/year paid biweekly in Texas, single filer — about $1,624 net per check (~$42,223/year take-home) before pre-tax deductions. California or New York withholding is typically lower net.

How much is $60,000 a year after taxes?

Example: $60,000/year paid semi-monthly in Texas, married filing jointly — about $2,179 net per check (~$52,306/year). Use the calculator with your state and W-4 for a precise estimate.

How much is $75,000 a year per paycheck?

$75,000 annually is $2,884.62 per biweekly check before taxes (26 pay periods). After federal, state, and FICA: about $2,360 net in Texas or $2,239 in California (single, 2026 tables). Enter your details above.

How much is $100,000 a year after taxes?

Example: $100,000/year paid monthly in New York, single — about $6,166 net per month (~$73,986/year) with 2026 federal and NY state withholding. High earners may also see additional Medicare tax.

What is the difference between biweekly and semi-monthly pay?

Biweekly is every two weeks (26 checks/year). Semi-monthly is twice per month (24 checks/year). The same annual salary yields slightly different per-check gross amounts and can change per-check withholding slightly.

Which states have no income tax?

Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire (wages), South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming have no state income tax on wages. The calculator sets state tax to zero for these states.

Does California have a paycheck calculator?

Yes. Select California in the state dropdown above for 2026 CA progressive withholding plus federal tax and FICA. Example: $75,000/year biweekly, single — about $2,239 net per check. Local taxes (e.g. SDI) may differ from your employer’s stub.

Do 401(k) contributions reduce my taxes?

Traditional 401(k) contributions are pre-tax: they lower taxable income for federal (and most state) income tax. HSA and FSA work similarly when funded pre-tax. Roth 401(k) does not reduce current withholding. To project long-term 401(k) growth with employer match, use our 401(k) calculator.

Is this the same as a pay stub from my employer?

No. This is an estimate for planning. Your employer’s payroll system uses exact YTD totals, local taxes, benefit elections, and rounding rules. For how to read each section on a real stub, see our pay stub glossary.

Can I print a pay stub from this calculator?

Yes. Use Export PDF above for a pay-stub-style summary with gross, taxes, deductions, and net pay. It is not a substitute for your employer’s official stub — see our pay stub glossary for what belongs on a workplace earnings statement.

What is the difference between gross pay and net pay?

Gross pay is your total earnings before taxes and deductions. Net pay (take-home pay) is what lands in your bank account after federal tax, state tax, FICA, and any pre- or post-tax deductions.

How do I calculate net pay?

Subtract taxes and deductions from gross pay for the pay period: federal income tax, state income tax (if any), FICA (Social Security and Medicare), optional local tax, and pre- or post-tax deductions. This take-home pay calculator does that math when you enter gross wages, state, filing status, and pay frequency.

Formula: net pay = gross − pre-tax deductions − taxes − post-tax deductions. Use salary or hourly mode above; results are estimates for budgeting, not an official pay stub.

Does overtime affect my take-home pay?

Yes. In hourly mode, overtime hours increase gross pay, which increases taxes withheld. For OT-first math and a 2026 federal overtime deduction preview, use the overtime calculator.

Is this paycheck calculator accurate?

It uses 2026 federal and state withholding tables for estimates. Results are typically within a few dollars per line of comparable free calculators, but your employer’s payroll system may differ on rounding, YTD caps, and local rules. Always verify with your actual pay stub.

How much is $20 an hour annually after taxes?

At $20/hour and 40 hours/week, gross pay is $41,600/year ($800/week). Example: Texas, single, default W-4 — about $682 net per week (~$35,473/year take-home) plus FICA and federal withholding. California or New York withholding is typically lower net.

Switch to Hourly mode above, enter $20 and your hours per period, and pick your state for an exact estimate.

What is my net income if I earn $70,000 a year?

$70,000 gross per year is about $2,692.31 per biweekly check before taxes. Example: Texas, single — roughly $2,224 net per check (~$57,833/year take-home). California, single — about $2,120 net per check (~$55,121/year).

Enter $70,000 annual equivalent in salary mode (or divide by your pay periods), select your state and W-4 details, and read net pay in the results panel.

How much is $1,500 take-home pay per week?

It depends whether $1,500 is gross or net. If you earn $1,500 gross per week in Texas, single — about $1,220 net after federal tax and FICA. If you need $1,500 net in your bank account, gross pay must be higher (often about $1,897/week in TX with default W-4 — adjust in the calculator).

This tool is gross-to-net. Raise or lower gross pay until the estimated net matches your target.

Is there a paycheck calculator for every state?

Yes. Select any of the 50 states + DC in the dropdown — the same take-home pay calculator applies 2026 state withholding rules without a separate page per state. No-tax states show $0 state income tax; progressive states use bracket tables.

For annual tax planning (refund vs balance due), pair this per-check estimate with our income tax calculator.

Does this include state disability (SDI) or paid family leave (PFL)?

Not in v2. Some states (for example California SDI, NY PFL, NJ TDI) withhold employee-paid disability or family-leave premiums on top of income tax and FICA. This calculator models federal and state income withholding, FICA, optional local income tax presets, and common pre-tax benefits — not those state insurance programs. Your pay stub may show lower net pay when SDI/PFL apply.
